MILES completed a two-phase overhaul of the Pediatric Post Anesthesia Care Unit in The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center. Originally having only 13 bays, the renovation project encompassed almost 16,000 square feet with the addition of two isolation rooms, 19 Phase I rooms, and 14 Stage II rooms; as well as crucial areas such as nurse stations, supply rooms, and support offices. The project utilized area vacated with the move of the EP/Catherization Labs to OU Medical Center as an earlier project.

The new bays are almost twice the size of the original with modern finishes that are both durable and cleanable. Custom wall covering was strategically placed as “artwork” and curtains and accent colors were designed to enhance both the patient and staff experience. The Phase I area is where children are first placed once out of key surgeries and where parents are allowed to first interact with their child after the procedure. Stage II allows for individual rooms as the child recovers and allows parents and family members to be with the child. Staff areas, including nurse stations, were designed with a continued colorful theme that is present within the overall hospital.

MILES provided comprehensive design services for this project including initial needs assessment, programming, preliminary layout, and complete construction services including assistance with equipment planning and furniture selection. The project was completed in two phases to allow the OR’s and hospital to remain functional. Working with the clinical staff, administration, and physicians the design strategy for this area helped to increase throughput for the OR’s and made a great impact both on recruitment of staff and parent/patient satisfaction.
