Miles Architecture, an award-winning design firm, is seeking a full-time Senior Technical Architect – Laboratory & Security-Sensitive Facilities to join our team. This position is intended for a highly experienced architect with a proven background in the planning, design, and construction of laboratory, research, and security-sensitive facilities.
The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, a thorough understanding of building systems and constructability, and significant experience leading complex projects through design, documentation, construction, and occupancy. This individual will serve as a technical leader within the firm, helping guide projects from programming through construction administration while ensuring design quality, technical accuracy, and successful project execution.
Working closely with project managers, architects, interior designers, consultants, contractors, and clients, the Senior Technical Architect will provide technical leadership throughout all phases of project delivery. The role requires the ability to coordinate complex building systems, resolve technical challenges, maintain design quality, and successfully navigate projects with specialized operational, infrastructure, and security requirements.
This position will play an active role in Construction Administration, including submittal and shop drawing review, RFI responses, field observations, contractor coordination, issue resolution, commissioning support, punch list activities, and project closeout. The successful candidate will also contribute to firmwide QA/QC initiatives, technical mentoring, and the continued growth of Miles Architecture's laboratory and security-sensitive facilities practice.
Responsibilities:

Lead technical planning, coordination, and delivery of laboratory, research, and security-sensitive facility projects.

Collaborate with architects, interior designers, consultants, and project managers to support integrated project delivery.

Participate in programming, planning, and technical coordination efforts for facilities with specialized infrastructure, equipment, and operational requirements.

Produce and coordinate design and construction documents across all project phases.

Review project drawings, details, specifications, and documentation for technical accuracy, constructability, and quality.

Coordinate complex structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology, and specialty building systems.

Participate in coordination meetings with clients, consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders.

Research and evaluate materials, products, and technical solutions to support project objectives.

Review shop drawings, submittals, RFIs, substitutions, and product data for conformance with design intent and contract documents.

Conduct field observations and assist with resolution of construction-related issues.

Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and owners throughout construction.

Assist project teams during commissioning, punch list activities, and project closeout.

Participate in QA/QC reviews at key project milestones and provide recommendations to improve document quality and coordination.

Support the development and implementation of office standards, technical resources, and best practices.

Provide technical guidance and mentorship to project team members regarding detailing, constructability, building systems, and code compliance.

Collaborate with firm leadership and project teams to support quality improvement initiatives and technical problem-solving efforts.
Qualifications:

Professional degree in Architecture (BArch, MArch, or equivalent).

Architectural licensure is preferred.

20+ years of professional architectural work experience.

Experience leading the planning, design, and construction of laboratory and research facilities is required.

Experience leading the planning, design, and construction of secure, controlled-access, or security-sensitive facilities is required.

Strong understanding of building systems, specialized infrastructure, and technical project delivery.

Experience coordinating complex architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology, and specialty systems.

Strong understanding of building codes, specifications, construction methods, and building systems integration.

Significant Construction Administration experience, including submittal review, shop drawing review, RFI responses, field observations, contractor coordination, punch list activities, and project closeout.

Experience coordinating multidisciplinary consultant teams.

Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Newforma, Microsoft Office, and Adobe Creative Suite.

Strong communication and critical-thinking skills.

Ability to work independently while supporting collaborative project delivery.
